Media Arts Council | Volunteer Job Description: Treasurer

The Media Arts Council works to further its mission to actively support local artists and integrate a wide range of arts into the life of the entire community. Our overriding passion is the importance of arts in the community, and the Media Arts Council seeks to support all who take part.

In addition to adhering to the expectations of the board as a whole and as individual board members, the volunteer Treasurer assumes the following responsibilities:

  • Manage financial oversight – review and enforce MAC’s financial policies and procedures
  • Ensure resources are allocated effectively
  • Maintain financial records (including assets and sensitive information) and ensure transactions are properly documented
  • Create an operating budget with other board members and staff, and monitor adherence to the budget
  • Create and present financial reports to the board at monthly meetings
  • Follow all state and IRS financial laws and regulations
  • Lead the nonprofit board’s financial committee
  • Advise the board on necessary financial strategy and fundraising steps
  • Assist staff in preparing annual and continuous audits
  • Identify and manage risk

 

Expectations of Individual Board Members

Each individual board member is expected to

  • Know the organization’s mission, policies, programs, and needs
  • Faithfully read and understand the organization’s financial statements
  • Serve as active advocates and ambassadors for the organization and fully engage in identifying and securing the financial resources and partnerships necessary for the organization to advance its mission
  • Leverage connections, networks, and resources to develop collective action to fully achieve the organization’s mission
  • Give a minimum personal financial donation of $500
  • Help identify personal connections that can benefit the organization’s fundraising and reputational standing, and can influence public policy
  • Prepare for, attend, and conscientiously participate in at least 8 of 11 board meetings
  • Participate fully in at least one committee
  • Purchase tickets for and attend at least four events per year

 

Further, volunteer board members are expected to

  • Follow the organization’s bylaws, policies, and board resolutions
  • Sign an annual conflict-of-interest disclosure and update it during the year if necessary, as well as disclose potential conflicts before meetings and actual conflicts during meetings
  • Maintain confidentiality about all internal matters of the organization
